A QUICK HISTORY

This is by no means a comprehensive look at Hideaki Anno's history in the industry. But for those interested in Anno and his work, it should provide a good starting point.

Hideaki Anno was born on May 22nd, 1960 in the Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. At 14 years old, Anno fist saw the Japanese TV series Space Battleship Yamato. This TV show would leave a lasting impact on the budding film maker. Anno first dabbled in live-action film with an 8mm film camera he got when he was 17. His first motion pictures consisted mostly of Kamen Rider and Ultraman shorts he made with friends.

When Anno was 20 years old he entered the film making dept. of the Osaka College of Art. It is here he meets Hiroyuki Yamaga. Anno and Yamaga would later go on to create the most innovative anime studio of Japan, Studio GAiNAX.

In the early 80's Anno provided mechanical designs and principle animation work for the opening animation short, directed by Yamaga, for the sci-fi convention Daicon 3. During these years, Anno went to Tokyo with Yamaga to help out with key animation and retouch work for the pilot episode of the animated TV series "Macross: Super Dimension Fortress".
